A gift is not an object. It is an act of attention. Omotenashi teaches: (1) the gift should show you have been paying attention — not what everyone wants, but what this specific person needs, (2) the wrapping matters — the Japanese art of gift wrapping (tsutsumi) treats the presentation as part of the gift, and (3) give without keeping score — if you are calculating reciprocity, you are not giving. You are trading.
