At Shinto shrines across Japan, visitors write their wishes on small wooden plaques called ema and hang them on dedicated racks. Exam success. Health for a family member. A safe pregnancy. The wishes are earnest, specific, and deeply human. Writing an ema is not magic. It is intention — the act of putting your hope into words and offering it to something larger than yourself.
