Giri (義理) is one of the most powerful forces in Japanese social life. It describes the sense of obligation you feel toward others — the duty to repay kindness, to fulfil your responsibilities, to honour the relationships that support you. Giri is not optional. It is not a favour you choose to return. It is a debt you feel in your bones. A colleague helps you — you owe them giri. A mentor teaches you — you owe them giri. Your parents raise you — you owe them giri for life. This can be beautiful (the deep loyalty it creates) and heavy (the weight of unpaid obligations).
