Western leadership values decisiveness, individual vision, and visible authority. Japanese leadership values consensus-building (nemawashi), quiet competence, and creating conditions for others to succeed. The Western leader says 'follow me.' The Japanese leader asks 'what does the team need?' Both can be effective. But in an age of complexity and interconnection, the Japanese approach may be better suited to the challenges ahead.
